Before the Screen

On writing, filmmaking, and refusing to wait for permission.

Some stories don’t knock politely before entering your life, they just move in.

They follow you through airports and long drives. They sit beside you in cafés, whisper in the middle of the night and replay themselves while you’re supposed to be thinking about something else. They become less like ideas and more like memories you’re responsible for preserving.

Light Enough was one of those stories.

Long before it became prose, it existed as a film in my mind.

I could see the framing before I wrote the dialogue. I knew where the silence belonged before I knew what would be said. I could feel the tension between characters, imagine the weight of a glance that lasted just a second too long, and picture the moments that would live between the words.

I’ve always written visually. Every script begins as a film in my head.

Like many independent filmmakers, I believed the next step was simple: finish the script, find the funding, make the film. Reality, of course, is rarely that straightforward.

Over the years, I’ve written, rewritten and refined scripts. I’ve created pitch decks, prepared budgets, submitted to grants, entered conversations, taken meetings, followed up after promising discussions and waited…sometimes patiently, sometimes impatiently, for someone else to see what I saw.

Some doors opened. Some almost opened. Some never moved beyond the possibility of what they could have been.

The journey of bringing a story from an idea into reality is rarely just about the story itself. It’s about timing, access, resources and finding the right people who believe in the vision enough to help carry it forward.

And sometimes, it’s about learning lessons you never expected to learn.

One of the more unexpected lessons of trying to finance films as a woman is learning to distinguish genuine interest in your work from interest in you. Sometimes those lines become blurred before you’ve even finished discussing the project.

I’ve sat in rooms where the conversation drifted somewhere it had no business going, and watched the enthusiasm for the work disappear the moment I redirected it.

For a while, those moments were discouraging. They made me wonder whether I was spending more time navigating people’s perceptions of me than talking about the stories I’d spent years writing. But eventually I realised something important: every hour I spent waiting for someone else’s validation was an hour my stories remained unseen.

And that realisation changed everything.

Because these stories were already finished.

They did not become less meaningful because they had not yet found investors.

They did not become less worthy because they had not yet reached a screen.

They were simply waiting for an audience.

So I decided to stop waiting.

This space is where those stories begin their first life.

Every piece you’ll read here was originally conceived as a film. I’ve adapted them into prose because I refuse to believe that a story only becomes real once a camera is rolling.

Perhaps that’s the beautiful thing about storytelling. Before it is ever projected onto a screen, it lives somewhere much more intimate. In imagination.

You don’t need a cinema to feel a character’s heartbreak. You don’t need a soundtrack to understand tension. You don’t need a camera to picture a face. Words have always had the power to create worlds. And so, this is where we begin.

We’re not beginning at the premiere, at a festival, or after distribution has been secured.

We’re beginning here. With readers. With imagination. With faith.

Light Enough is the first story I want to share with you.

It follows Shadé, a dark-skinned Nigerian woman who returns home for her twin sister’s wedding. Amid the joy and chaos of celebration, she finds herself quietly unraveling, haunted by a childhood shaped by colorism and conditional love.

A long-forgotten photograph forces her to confront memories she has spent years trying to bury, blurring the lines between past and present and exposing the subtle wounds of being overlooked, unseen and forced to remain silent.

But as the celebration around her continues, Shadé makes a quiet but radical choice. To show up…on her own terms.

This story is deeply personal because it explores questions I believe many of us carry.

How much of ourselves do we shrink to make other people comfortable? How long can silence disguise itself as peace? What does it truly mean to take up space when the world has spent years teaching you not to?

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be releasing Light Enough in chapters.

You’ll meet the characters before they’re cast.

You’ll walk through scenes before they’re filmed.

You’ll experience the story the way I first experienced it…in words.

It won’t be the only one. Light Enough is the first of a small collection of stories I’ve been carrying this way, written as film scripts, waiting for their moment. There’s another one already forming just behind it, and I’ll bring you into that world once this one has had the chance to breathe.

Maybe one day Light Enough will become the film it was always written to be.

Maybe it will find its way onto a screen.

Maybe it will take a path I cannot yet see.

But I’ve learned something along this journey:

Stories deserve audiences long before they receive budgets.

And if one day this story finds itself on a screen, I hope you’ll remember that before there were lights, cameras and actors, there were simply words and a group of readers who believed enough to begin the journey with me.

Every film begins somewhere.
